I have no idea if anyone has said anything like this, but this is what I have been thinking. 

So I believe that the ‘fiancee’ thing is a made up story. I truly believe that they both moved from Mystic Falls to raise the kids. Even though the kids aren’t really biologically hers, she still feels a love and connection to them since she carried them and what now. So going to Texas, they needed a new life and a new identity kind of thing. I believe the engagement isn’t truly out of love but because they have kids, raising them and all, so the engagement is more of a cover up kind of thing. Also maybe not to confuse the kids? 

That’s just what I believe. I really don’t think that it was because they are in love or anything. Because a normal couple that are engaged and have kids is less likely to draw attentions than two people living together and who had kids but not romantically or physically involved at all.
